What the Course Covers

The EFAW syllabus covers the core skills every workplace first aider needs:
 

• The role and responsibilities of a first aider, including consent, infection control, and recording incidents
• Assessing an emergency scene and carrying out a primary survey (DR ABCDE)
• CPR and safe use of an automated external defibrillator (AED)
• The recovery position and ongoing casualty monitoring
• Choking, seizures, and shock
• Wounds and bleeding, including life threatening bleeding, wound packing, and tourniquet use
   

Recognising and Responding to Anaphylaxis

As part of the medical conditions covered on the course, our trainers also teach learners to recognise and respond to anaphylaxis, a severe and life threatening allergic reaction.

This is increasingly valuable knowledge for workplaces and education settings alike.

Learners explore the common triggers, including insect stings, medications, and food allergens, and the signs to watch for, such as swelling around the throat and lips, breathing difficulty, an itchy rash, and a sudden feeling of faintness.

The practical response sequence is covered step by step
 

• Place the casualty in a comfortable position
• Administer an adrenaline auto injector into the upper outer thigh 
• Call 999 or 112, and give a second injector after five minutes if symptoms persist.

If the casualty becomes unconscious, learners are taught to check the airway and breathing and begin CPR.
